📰 Top Veteran Stories
The Fourth of July is a time for Americans to celebrate, but it can be challenging for veterans with PTSD. Fireworks, with their loud noises and bright flashes, often trigger PTSD symptoms. Dr. Christopher Scuderi, a family physician and former Navy officer, offers tips for managing these triggers:
Talk to Neighbors: Veterans should ask neighbors about their fireworks plans to avoid being caught off guard.
Gear Up: Use ear protection and darken rooms to minimize the impact of fireworks.
Practice Relaxation Techniques: Use deep breathing and mindfulness to stay calm.
Cool the Body Down: Lower body temperature with cold showers or ice packs to help manage stress.
Scuderi also recommends using resources like the PTSD Coach mobile app or the VA crisis line for additional support.
More than 30,000 people have signed a petition against Prince Harry, who received the Pat Tillman Award from ESPN for his work with the Invictus Games. The award honors Pat Tillman, a former NFL player who joined the military after 9/11 and was killed in Afghanistan.
The petition, started by Patti Mickel, argues that the award should reflect Tillman's values and be given to someone with similar dedication to their country. Critics, including Tillman's mother, Mary, believe there are more deserving recipients and question Harry's suitability due to past controversies and his privileged background. Harry founded the Invictus Games in 2014 to support wounded veterans and recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.

HUD-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) held nationwide brainstorming boot camps to enhance their efforts in combating Veteran homelessness. These boot camps aim to elevate the successful HUD-VASH program by engaging staff and partners in collaborative discussions to find quicker and more efficient housing solutions for veterans.
HUD-VASH, a collaboration between HUD, VA, and over 750 public housing agencies (PHAs) provides housing vouchers and comprehensive support services for homeless Veterans. The boot camps allowed participants to share insights and develop strategies to streamline processes, increase flexibility, and improve voucher utilization.
The initiatives discussed are already making a positive impact, helping Veterans secure housing more swiftly. The VA and HUD continue to evaluate and implement these improvements to maximize the program's effectiveness.

⚕️ Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Updates
The Kalispell Vet Center in Montana has introduced an innovative therapy method that incorporates indoor rock climbing to help Veterans and service members overcome physical and emotional challenges, particularly PTSD. Navy Veteran and counselor Brandon Pelfrey, who enjoys climbing, developed this approach to help individuals transfer the mental skills gained from climbing into their daily lives.
The therapy fosters physical fitness, mental resilience, teamwork, and self-confidence. Counselors like Pelfrey and David Swenson tailor therapeutic approaches to individual needs, promoting flexibility and innovation. The climbing group has significantly positively impacted participants, encouraging personal growth and faster recovery.
This method also helps build positive community relationships and invites more Veterans to counseling services. Vet Centers offer various counseling services to support Veterans' transition from military to civilian life and provide referrals to additional benefits.

Alternatively, you can purchase premade basil syrup if you prefer not to make your own.
Shake: Muddle the remaining 8 basil leaves in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add 1/2 cup ice, bourbon, lemon juice, and 3 tablespoons of the basil simple syrup. Shake vigorously until chilled (about 30 seconds).

Meme of the Week
Hero of the Week: William Jasper
William Jasper was born in 1750 in what is now South Carolina. Little is known about his early life, but he became a significant figure during the American Revolutionary War due to his bravery and dedication to the cause of American independence.
Jasper first gained recognition for his heroism during the Battle of Sullivan's Island in 1776. As a sergeant in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, he was stationed at Fort Moultrie when British naval forces attacked.
The fort's flag was shot down by enemy fire during the battle. Jasper risked his life to retrieve and raise the flag without hesitation, rallying the American troops and boosting their morale. This courageous act symbolized American resilience and determination, earning Jasper widespread admiration and respect.
Following this incident, Jasper continued to serve with distinction in various capacities. He frequently volunteered for dangerous missions and became known for his daring exploits. His dedication to the cause and willingness to undertake perilous assignments earned him a reputation as one of the most fearless soldiers in the Continental Army.
In addition to his battlefield heroics, William Jasper played a crucial role in the broader effort to create the United States. His actions exemplified the spirit of sacrifice and commitment that characterized the struggle for independence.
By boosting the morale of his fellow soldiers and inspiring confidence in the American cause, Jasper contributed to the Revolutionary War's eventual success. His willingness to face danger and his unwavering loyalty to the cause of liberty helped lay the foundation for establishing the United States.
Tragically, William Jasper's life was cut short during the Siege of Savannah in 1779. In a daring attempt to plant the colors on the enemy's parapet during the assault on the British fortifications, Jasper was mortally wounded. Despite his injuries, he managed to retrieve the flag and bring it back to his comrades before succumbing to his wounds.
William Jasper's heroism and sacrifice left a lasting legacy. He is commemorated by numerous monuments and place names, particularly in the southern United States.
His actions during the Revolutionary War serve as a testament to the courage and determination of those who fought for American independence. Jasper's story continues to inspire and remind us of the profound impact of individual bravery and dedication in pursuing freedom.
